Many people feel anxious before giving birth. If you are pregnant, you may be afraid of losing control, of the pain or of harming the baby or yourself. Some people are so afraid of childbirth that it affects their whole life, but what exactly is fear of childbirth?<\/strong><\/p>\n

What is fear of childbirth?<\/h2>\n

About one in five pregnant women report feeling some form of anxiety or fear related to childbirth. These fears may be based on negative thoughts, feelings or fears about childbirth from both physical and\/or psychological aspects. For example, they may be worried about losing control of the birth situation, fear that something will happen to you or the baby, or previous exposure to violence and abuse.<\/p>\n

Fear of childbirth is usually divided into primary<\/em> and secondary<\/em> fear of childbirth. Primary fear of childbirth means that the pregnant woman has a fear of childbirth already during her first pregnancy, but can also be expressed even before pregnancy. Secondary fear of childbirth occurs after a previous birth with a negative\/traumatic experience.<\/p>\n

Childbirth phobia<\/h3>\n

Furthermore, fear of childbirth, whether primary or secondary, can be divided into different levels of severity, ranging from mild to severe. If there is an extreme fear of even considering pregnancy or vaginal birth, it is usually referred to as childbirth phobia<\/em>.<\/p>\n

It is important to tell your midwife at the antenatal clinic if you have any negative thoughts, feelings or concerns about your upcoming birth. They will then talk to you more about this and help you further. You may receive further help within your own maternity unit and\/or be referred to another unit, depending on how strong your concerns are. In maternity clinics, midwives and doctors are used to working with fear of childbirth, so there is nothing to be ashamed of.<\/p>\n
