Here we go through the most common forms of <strong data-start=\"510\" data-end=\"541\">pharmacological pain relief<\/strong>, i.e. drug-based relief, and how they can be used during childbirth.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"629\" data-end=\"672\">What is pharmacological pain relief?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"674\" data-end=\"743\">In childbirth, you can choose between two main routes for pain relief:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"747\" data-end=\"821\"><strong data-start=\"747\" data-end=\"783\">Non-pharmacological pain relief<\/strong> - natural methods without medicines.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"747\" data-end=\"821\"><strong data-start=\"824\" data-end=\"855\">Pharmacological pain relief<\/strong> - medicines that affect the body's pain signals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"906\" data-end=\"1075\">This article focuses on pharmacological options, that is, different <strong data-start=\"983\" data-end=\"1018\">medicines and anaesthetic methods<\/strong> which can reduce or block pain during childbirth.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"906\" data-end=\"1075\"><em><strong data-start=\"1082\" data-end=\"1095\">Remember!<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0There is no prestige in the type or amount of pain relief you choose. The most important thing is that you feel safe and involved in the decision.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1244\" data-end=\"1289\">Options for pharmacological pain relief<\/h2>\n<h3 data-start=\"1291\" data-end=\"1302\">nitrous oxide<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1303\" data-end=\"1556\">Nitrous oxide has been used in obstetrics for over 100 years. It is given in a mixture with oxygen and inhaled through a mask that you hold yourself.<br data-start=\"1441\" data-end=\"1444\" \/>About 14 % of all births use nitrous oxide alone. Many appreciate being able to control the pain relief themselves.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1563\" data-end=\"1590\">Epidural anesthesia (EDA)<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1591\" data-end=\"1784\"><strong data-start=\"1591\" data-end=\"1612\">Epidural anesthesia<\/strong>, or spinal anesthesia, is given in the epidural space - a space outside the spinal canal.<br data-start=\"1695\" data-end=\"1698\" \/>An anesthesiologist inserts a thin plastic catheter through which the anesthetic is given, either:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"1788\" data-end=\"1821\">via <strong data-start=\"1792\" data-end=\"1818\">pump that you control yourself<\/strong>,<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1788\" data-end=\"1821\">via <strong data-start=\"1828\" data-end=\"1853\">continuous dosing<\/strong>,<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1788\" data-end=\"1821\">or by <strong data-start=\"1871\" data-end=\"1896\">repeated injections<\/strong> by the midwife.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1914\" data-end=\"2149\">Common side effects include itching (in 50-80 %) and a drop in blood pressure, which is often counteracted with fluids or drips.<br data-start=\"2029\" data-end=\"2032\" \/>For those who have <strong data-start=\"2048\" data-end=\"2089\">pre-eclampsia (pre-eclampsia)<\/strong> EDA can have a positive effect by lowering blood pressure.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2151\" data-end=\"2323\">Research is still investigating the relationship between EDA and length of labor, pushing ability and risk of instrumental delivery. After delivery, the catheter is removed.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2330\" data-end=\"2349\">Spinal anesthesia<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2350\" data-end=\"2539\"><strong data-start=\"2350\" data-end=\"2369\">Spinal anesthesia<\/strong> is given inside the epidural space and acts quickly, but the effect lasts only 1-4 hours.<br data-start=\"2454\" data-end=\"2457\" \/>It is often used in <strong data-start=\"2478\" data-end=\"2510\">faster labor progress<\/strong>, especially in women giving birth.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2546\" data-end=\"2575\">PCB - Paracervical blockade<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2576\" data-end=\"2842\">PCB involves injecting a local anesthetic into <strong data-start=\"2619\" data-end=\"2637\">the cervix<\/strong> to block nerves that send pain signals to the brain.<br data-start=\"2701\" data-end=\"2704\" \/>The effect is similar to the epidural, but <strong data-start=\"2737\" data-end=\"2753\">does not stun<\/strong> vagina, pelvic floor or rectum.
