    Pain relief during childbirth is one of the most common topics of conversation before giving birth. There are several ways to relieve pain, both with and without medicines, and what feels right varies from person to person. Being informed about your options can give you peace of mind and help you feel more in control during childbirth.

    Your options for pain relief

    You have right to get the pain relief you want during childbirth.
    The methods are often divided into two main groups:

    Non-pharmacological pain relief - pain relief without drugs

    It uses the body's own resources, support and relaxation to relieve pain. The aim is often to help you feel in control, safe and confident in your body's ability.

    Pharmacological pain relief - pain relief with medicines

    These methods use medical treatment to reduce or block the pain. They can sometimes be combined with non-drug methods.

    How you experience pain

    Pain during childbirth is a personal and complex experience which is affected by both body and mind.
