Why you & your children should be vaccinated against TBE
Sponsored by Länsförsäkringar
During the summer months and in the midst of holiday planning, it can be easy to forget such an important point as getting vaccinated against TBE. That's why we want to remind you why this should be a priority!
What is TBE?
TBE is a viral disease spread by ticks. In most cases, the disease causes mild symptoms, but it can also lead to more serious illness - in the worst cases, to problems that do not fully heal.
What are the symptoms of TBE?
If you are infected with TBE, you will often have mild symptoms of headache, muscle aches, tiredness or fever. This usually passes after a few days. Up to one third of people develop an inflammation of the brain or meninges that can cause much more serious problems. For some people, this type of infection can contribute to problems that never go away. These may include difficulties with balance, concentration and memory. In severe cases, paralysis may also occur.
What is the treatment for TBE?
There is currently no treatment for TBE, and only vaccination ensures protection against infection. If you live or spend time in risk areas, it is particularly important to get vaccinated against TBE.
Why should you get vaccinated?
The risk areas have increased and even if the risk of getting an illness that never goes away is small, it is there. Vaccination is the only way to avoid infection, so you can be sure that your family stays healthy.
The risk areas are in southern and central Sweden, mainly in the coastal areas around Stockholm, Södermanland and Uppsala. Also in the Västra Götaland region. The TBE virus is spreading throughout Sweden, and Skåne, Blekinge, Kronoberg, Kalmar, Jönköping, Östergötland, Örebro, Värmland, Västmanland, Dalarna and Gävleborg counties are now affected.
What to consider before vaccination
- Keep an eye on the list of risk areas! If you live or spend time in a risk area, you and your family should be vaccinated.
- Vaccinate children early, from the age of 1.
- Vaccinate your family well before the tick season starts to get the safest protection possible. Ticks can be active for as long as March to November, so if you are considering vaccination, it is best to do it as soon as possible, even if it does not mean full protection this summer.
- Both children and adults can contract TBE, so review vaccination coverage for the whole family.
What happens if I am infected before I am vaccinated?
In the event of non-vaccination and possible infection, the following applies Child insurance and health and accident insurance for adults. We are usually careful about insuring things like our cars, where most people have full insurance, but we forget to insure the most valuable things we have. One child insurance helps your family financially in the event of injury or illness and is a form of security that stays with you up to the age of 25.
