Preparing your child for school by reading

Sponsored by Akademibokhandeln

Small children = fast pace. The days usually go by in a blur with young children in the family, but the fact is that even children benefit from quiet moments and breaks. Taking out books is usually one of the best ways to de-energize, but perhaps most importantly, to have a moment together. In this article, Akademibokhandeln guides you as a parent on how to inspire your child to enjoy reading!

When children are around 4-5 years old, a huge amount happens in their development. Many are in the “big kid” section of the preschool and have an active day filled with friends, maybe some activity, learning and reading. Some children show an interest in sound and want to read for themselves from this age! While others show interest in completely different areas. What all children at this age have in common is their desire. A desire to learn new things, develop and move forward in life. Children are sponges!

For you as a parent, this is a period where taking time for reading is usually very appreciated by both you and your child. It's a time for you to be close and build on the connection with your child, but also to check off the day or the mood. It is not uncommon for children to open up during reading time in the evening, as it is a time when they feel safe.

The child himself tends to show great interest in chapter books at this age. Is “Summer Shadow” part of your life yet? Or maybe “The Superhero Handbook”? Now they're finding book series that become favorites, where you might collect the books and read a chapter a night? If you haven't started this yet, it's a perfect idea for birthday or Christmas gifts! A book series gives you a common interest and something to talk about even at the dinner table when it's time for dinner. Chapter books are also a great way to prepare your child for school!

Speaking of back-to-school, there are also lots of great books to prepare your child for it. Some of our favorites are Let's start the first year and Stories about friends.

One last tip!

Make sure you have books available and easily accessible in your everyday life. This will reduce the step to reading and increase the opportunities to browse books if they are always available. Keep books at children's height, so they can easily pick out their favorites when it's reading time, or if they want to browse the books themselves, they can do so. Simply make books a natural part of your everyday life!
