Did you know that the amount of blood in your body has doubled by mid-pregnancy? And the blood contains iron, which is part of hemoglobin and is responsible for transporting oxygen through the blood. However, with the increase in blood volume, the iron does not increase on its own and may need to be supplemented through an iron-rich diet and/or supplements.

How do you know if you have low iron levels?
Iron transports oxygen around the bloodstream and when iron levels are low it is common to feel tired and listless. These are common feelings just as the pregnancy progresses, so it can be difficult to link fatigue specifically to the need for iron. Fortunately, your midwife will monitor your iron levels throughout your pregnancy to make sure they don't get too low. If iron levels are low, your midwife will tell you so that you have the opportunity to stabilize your levels and feel better.

How to increase your iron levels!
To further increase iron levels, you can also eat foods with a higher iron content. Examples of such foods are:

  • Eggs
  • Liver paste
  • Meat, fish & poultry
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Green leafy vegetables, such as spinach & kale
  • Peas, beans and lentils

To optimize iron absorption, it is good to combine these foods with vitamin C. Examples of foods high in vitamin C include strawberries, peppers, kiwi and oranges.

Replenishing low iron levels can help reduce the tiredness and fatigue that pregnant women often feel, and blood juice is a fantastic option! Blutsaft contains natural extracts from herbs and fruits and is free of preservatives and artificial colors and flavors. The supplement is also available as a vegan option and is available in both liquid and tablet form with folic acid, which is important for the baby's development in the stomach.

Blutsaft has been on the Swedish market for over 70 years, so it is not surprising that it is Sweden's best-selling iron supplement. Blutsaft is available in pharmacies, health and grocery stores and online.
