How you can make learning easier
It's time to start school - a big step for your child, but perhaps an even bigger step for you as a parent. What can you do to avoid butterflies in your stomach?
Is there anything you can do as a parent to make the transition easier?
Starting preschool is a big change for the child, who may need extra closeness and security at home during the transition. Try to avoid other major changes in your child's life. It can also be a good idea to try to spend some extra time with your child doing something they enjoy. Having routines at home in everyday life can also provide security for many children. When many things continue as usual, it can be easier for the child to cope with all the new things that starting pre-school entails.
During settling-in, staff will work with the parent(s) who know the child best. Tell them about your child, what you think your child needs and ask any questions you have to the staff. Different preschools have different routines for settling-in and changes to the settling-in plan may be needed to meet the needs of different children. For example, a more cautious child may need more parental closeness and a longer settling-in period. Settling in is made easier if you, as a parent, have good cooperation with and trust in the preschool staff. It is then easier for the parent to convey security and that the preschool is a good place for the child when the child is more uncertain.
