Why you should buy pregnancy insurance
Sponsored by Länsförsäkringar
Pregnancy insurance is the only insurance cover available for an unborn child. The paid-up version of the insurance provides cover in the event that your child is born with an illness or suffers an injury during childbirth. Pregnancy insurance comes in different variants, and here we explain what the two variants from Länsförsäkringar mean.
Länsförsäkringar is there to give you and your loved ones peace of mind, no matter what turns life takes. Here you can read more about the pregnancy insurance that Länsförsäkringar offers and buy insurance.
What kind of pregnancy insurance can I choose from?
Länsförsäkringar offers free pregnancy insurance and pregnancy insurance that you pay for.
How are Pregnancy Free and Pregnancy Insurance different?
Pregnancy Free is a combined accident insurance and death benefit, while Pregnancy Insurance has much more extensive cover. What do we mean by that, you may ask? Don't worry - we'll clarify the terms so that you can easily decide which insurance to take out and why!
There is no reason to turn down something that is free, but keep in mind that the coverage in the free version is limited and there is no possibility of reimbursement in case you give birth to a child that turns out to have a disease.
In the Pregnancy Insurance you pay for, you get extended cover and the insurance applies if the baby is born with an illness. You are also entitled to compensation if the child suffers a birth injury, for example if the child is injured by lack of oxygen during childbirth. In addition, there is cover if the baby falls ill during the first six months after birth, and the insurance also covers certain complications for the pregnant woman, such as pre-eclampsia, emergency caesarean section, severe rupture of membranes and blood clots during pregnancy. So Pregnancy Insurance is a far more comprehensive product than Pregnancy Free.
What exactly does Länsförsäkringar Pregnancy Insurance cover?
- You receive a compensation of SEK 50,000 that can be paid if the child is born with certain serious diagnoses. You can read more about examples of these diagnoses with Länsförsäkringar.
- A birth injury to the child is treated as an illness, so there is the possibility of compensation if, for example, the child suffers brain damage due to lack of oxygen during childbirth that leads to a permanent disability. Without pregnancy insurance, the child is otherwise completely uninsured at that stage.
- Hospitalization at a rate of SEK 200 per day if your child remains in hospital after birth or if the pregnant woman needs to stay in hospital during pregnancy or in the event of complications during childbirth.
- In the event of a crisis reaction, for example when your child becomes seriously ill and you need to see a psychologist, we will reimburse treatments for crisis therapy up to a cost of SEK 15,000 per person.
- Compensation to the pregnant woman for certain complications in connection with pregnancy and childbirth is SEK 3 000 for one complication. Thereafter, the compensation is SEK 1 500 per complication.
When and how should I take out pregnancy insurance?
As soon as possible! Pregnancy insurance starts at the earliest at 15+0 weeks of pregnancy for the pregnant woman and the other parent, and at 22+0 weeks of pregnancy for the baby. If you choose to buy paid pregnancy insurance, make sure that the payment is made early, even before you have your first ultrasound. If you wait and an injury or illness is detected during the ultrasound before you have paid the insurance, you will not be reimbursed.
Next steps: Child insurance
Paid pregnancy insurance therefore provides cover that you cannot get otherwise and is valid until the child's six-month birthday.
Once the pregnancy is over and the baby is born, it's time for the next step - child insurance. We recommend that you take out this insurance as soon as possible after the birth of your child and you can find more information on this in our article This is child insurance.
