Breastfeeding with one or two breasts?

Perhaps you are wondering whether you should breastfeed with one or two breasts at the same time? There is really no right or wrong. In this article, we'll go into a little more detail to help you understand.

The first milk that comes out of the breast when the baby starts sucking is thirst quenching. It therefore contains more diluted breast milk to quench the baby's thirst. The milk that follows is more concentrated and aims to keep the baby full. If you put two glasses of milk from the first and second half of breastfeeding together, you will see the difference. For this reason, it can be helpful to offer the same breast until the baby lets go of the breast or falls asleep.

If you find that you have to sit and breastfeed all the time, you may want to try waking your baby. This will help them eat properly and give you a break between feedings (if that's what you want).

Before your breasts have had time to adjust, you may feel like you are walking around with one empty and one full breast. This will sort itself out over time, even if your child develops a favorite breast (which is very common).

If you feel tension and pain in the breast you are not breastfeeding on, you can gently hand express the worst of the pressure. Just make sure you don't sit down and pump on that breast to compensate, because then you'll produce even more milk (unless that's what you want) and your breasts won't adjust.

Finally, don't forget to take care of yourself while breastfeeding. Make sure you are comfortable, relaxed, eating and drinking, as breastfeeding requires a little extra energy. Read more about dietary advice before and during breastfeeding Here.
