The maternity letter - do you have to write it?

In this article we go through everything related to the birth certificate to do. Whether you choose to write one or not, we hope to provide you with guidance, thoughts and inspiration for childbirth.

What is a pre-nuptial agreement?

One prenuptial agreement is a text you write before your birth in which you describe what is important to you, how you want to be treated and what support you want.
You can give the letter to the midwives when you arrive at the birth center.

How much you want to write is entirely up to you - you know best what you need.
For many people, having their thoughts written down in advance is reassuring, whether they like to be in control or take things as they come.

Although you cannot influence everything in childbirth, you can influence your approach to it.

Things to consider when writing a birth certificate

A birth letter can be a good way to prepare yourself mentally and provide clarity for both you and the health professionals.
It helps midwives understand how you want to be treated, what you need and how they can best support you.

If you feel you want to take childbirth as it comes, the letter can still serve as an opportunity for self-reflection about how you think and feel about childbirth.

Examples of what a birth certificate might contain

You choose which parts are relevant to you.
The following points can help you to formulate your letter:

  • How do I react to pain? Is there any particular pain relief I want?
  • What would my dream birth look like?
  • What kind of communication do I want?
  • What kind of support do I want?
  • Is there a particular birthing position I want to give birth in?
  • How does your partner think or feel about childbirth?
  • Is there anything in particular that health professionals need to know about my background (mental or physical)?
  • How do I think about breastfeeding?
  • If I have given birth before: What do I want to change or add this time?

Approach to childbirth

Reading up on childbirth can be helpful - but try to do it in moderation. An open-minded approach makes it easier to deal with the situation, even if things don't go as planned.

Not everything in life is 100 % controllable, and childbirth is a clear example of this. Sometimes there is beauty in letting go of control and trusting both your body and the people around you.
